A leading power generation company in Brazil consolidated its infrastructure by migrating its SCADA server environment to a multi-cloud system, secure and suitable for mission-critical services, providing high availability, agility, and cost reduction for its operations. This solution allowed for predictability of expenses for this type of system and reduced unexpected costs related to equipment maintenance and replacement, as well as software updates.
Overview
The company was founded in 2017, initially strengthened by the support of the Actis Group, a global investor in renewable energy projects. Furthermore, it has been one of the fastest-growing international renewable energy companies in the world, with a robust renewable energy portfolio of over 19 GW of operational and construction capacity worldwide.
Since its inception, it has adhered uncompromisingly to rigorous standards in development and currently operates one of the largest fleets of solar projects in the Americas, reaching 2.7 GW of operational projects and a total of approximately 3.9 GW of contracted solar projects under development, construction and operation in Brazil alone.
What is a SCADA system?
SCADA is one of the systems at the heart of industrial automation. The acronym SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. In short, it's a technological solution developed to monitor and control industrial processes efficiently and accurately. It's a crucial part of the industrial control process in essential sectors such as Energy, Utilities, Oil & Gas, and Water Treatment and Distribution.
Agility and cost reduction
The main advantage of the implemented solution was the elimination of the main barrier to adopting a SCADA system: the high capital investment required for the implementation of on-premise servers. With our solution, in addition to spreading the investment over time, the company did not need to purchase hardware, licenses, or set up an internal data center environment, which would have entailed the need to purchase hardware and hire personnel for IT system maintenance.

BENEFITS OF THIS SOLUTION
With the possibility of hosting a SCADA system in a secure, highly available multi-cloud environment, the doors have opened for the next step in the evolution of this technology: a new business model for the provision of supervisory systems, a solution that, in turn, will enable agility and cost reduction for the entire market.
The SCADA system continued to be hosted on servers located at the client's premises, as is the case with most systems today, and is connected to a private cloud and data center environment. This architecture allows the system to be accessed and operated remotely through private, redundant, and highly available data channels. It is directly hosted in a protected environment and receives relevant information from the industrial process through a gateway which, in turn, receives data from the various IEDs (intelligent electronic devices).
Furthermore, this opened up possibilities for adopting this solution in new company ventures, for which this was not a feasible – or justifiable – investment due to prohibitive initial costs because of the size of the operation or the particularities of the segment in which it operates. In this way, there was an effective democratization of this technology, which became accessible not only to the client but also to a new segment of the industry.
Finally, the solution allowed the client to predict the costs associated with this type of system for new plants. Having the SCADA system hosted on-site would have subjected them to unexpected costs for server maintenance and replacement, as well as software updates – something that doesn't happen with our services.
With this solution implemented, the company now offers 100% data availability, a significant improvement compared to the past, when data acquisition problems were frequent and constantly impacted operations and the business due to an outdated server environment.
"Our solution eliminates the high investment required to implement this type of project. In addition to spreading the investment over time, companies do not need to purchase licenses or set up an internal control center, which would entail the need to purchase hardware and hire personnel for maintenance. Another benefit of this solution is the elimination of the need to implement redundant infrastructure in substations, power plants, or operation centers. In this case, our on-premise or cloud-based system can act as redundancy for the main server without the need for high capital investments and maintenance expenses. It is common for companies to make additional investments in server and machine projects anticipating operational growth, resulting in investment in the purchase and implementation of hardware that will be underutilized. With our solution, the client can contract only the resources they need at that moment, and, in the event of growth or reduction in operations, contract only additional services or reduce the contract value."
